Reading between the bands
The salary ranges above tell the headline story: seniors clustering around A$140k–180k base, leads pushing past A$200k. But the spread within a band matters more than the band itself. Two “senior” roles can differ by A$40k depending on whether you’re at a product company, a bank, or a services shop.
The skill demand chart is a lagging indicator — it reflects what’s in job ads now, which is what teams needed six months ago. TypeScript being near-ubiquitous isn’t news; the signal is how quickly cloud and platform skills (AWS, Kubernetes) have moved from “nice to have” to “expected” at senior level.
Why it matters down under
Three things are specific to building a career in Sydney:
- Hybrid won, and it’s sticky. Most roles want 2–3 days in-office. Fully-remote postings still exist but have thinned — if remote is non-negotiable for you, filter early.
- The clusters are real. Fintech, govtech, and a healthy startup scene mean the hard problems are here. You rarely need to leave the country for interesting work.
- On-shore data rules shape the stack. A lot of local roles care where data lives, which quietly pushes teams toward Sydney-region hosting and self-hosted options.
The practical takeaway: depth beats breadth in this market. Pick a layer — a language, a database, a deploy pipeline — and know it cold. The generalists who get hired fastest are the ones with one obvious area of mastery to anchor the rest.
Questions, answered
What does a senior developer earn in Sydney?
Base salaries for seniors (5–8 years) typically land between A$140k and A$180k, with staff/lead roles pushing past A$200k base before super and equity. Fintech and the big product companies sit at the top of those ranges.
Is remote work still common in Sydney tech?
Hybrid won. Most Sydney roles are 2–3 days in-office; fully-remote postings still exist (~27%) but have thinned since 2024. Full on-site is now the minority.
Which skills move the needle most right now?
TypeScript is effectively table stakes, React/Next dominates front-end listings, and cloud (AWS) plus Node round out the most-requested stack. Kubernetes shows up heavily in platform/senior roles.
